Investigation of the (1 0 0) and (0 0 1) surfaces of the Al5Fe2 intermetallic compound

The bulk structure of the ?-Al5Fe2 intermetallic compound consists in an ordered framework pentagonal antiprims with composition Al2Fe inside which nearly continuous chains fractionally occupied Al sites exist. At low temperature, ordering these channel atoms can occur, leading to various superstructures. Although Al5Fe2 phase is technological importance being present protective coating for steel parts, a detailed surface investigation this has not been reported yet. Here we describe growth single crystal by Czochralski method. Its identified as temperature polymorph ??. Density Functional Theory calculations were performed determine its formation enthalpy and electronic structure. A deep pseudogap noticeable at Fermi energy, found be magnetic. Two samples have extracted, presenting oriented either perpendicular channel’s direction ((0 0 1) surface) or parallel them ((1 0) surface). two surfaces investigated X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction scanning tunneling microscopy. Both exhibit some superstructures complexities, whose origin explained light density functional theory on model surfaces.
